What is a Cooling Tower?

It may seem like a simple question, but sometimes we all need a review of the basics. So,

What is a Cooling Tower?

A cooling tower is a piece of equipment that extracts waste heat to the atmosphere when air is brought into direct contact with water. This process is termed evaporative cooling and is designed to expose the maximum transient water surface to the maximum flow of air.

There are two predominant types of cooling towers; direct and indirect. Midwest Cooling Towers business is focused on direct, or open circuit cooling towers. Cooling towers are commonly characterized by directional flow of the air and water as well as the means by which the air is moved.

Crossflow and counterflow designs are the most common methods in which the air and water come into contact. Mechanical and natural draft designs are the most common methods by which the air is moved.

Crossflow Cooling Towers

Crossflow towers utilize a type of splash fill media through which the incoming air flows horizontally across the downward flow of water from the top distribution basins.

Counterflow Cooling Towers

In counterflow towers the incoming air moves vertically upward through the fill, counter to the downward water flow from the distribution laterals.

Mechanical and Natural Draft Cooling Towers

Mechanical draft towers utilize some method of mechanically force, such as a fan to move air through the tower.

Natural draft towers utilized the buoyancy of the warm air combined with a tall chimney to naturally draw air through the tower.

Component Sales Department Changes at Midwest Cooling Towers

There have been some changes in the Component Sales Department at Midwest Cooling Towers over the past couple of weeks.

Tom Faulkner has accepted a new position within our organization in the Estimating/Inspection Department.
Noel Ogle will be replacing Tom in the Component Sales Department.

Click on this link to view a PDF document providing a brief introduction to Noel.

He is not new to Midwest Cooling Towers, as he was previously in the Purchasing Department and worked on our Flue Gas De-sulfurization projects prior to that. Noel will be transitioning over the next couple of weeks, with Tom’s help, and will be the new Sales contact for all of Tom’s customers. Noel’s extension number will be 112, the same as Tom’s was, which should simplify the navigation of the phone system for those customers affected by this change.

We are very excited about Noel’s involvement in our Component Sales Department. He brings an excellent skill set to the position as he has worked in the contractor trade for much of his life, which will allow him to mesh well with our diverse customer base.

We also wanted to take this opportunity to reintroduce Sherrie Franklin, also in the Component Sales Department. Sherrie has been with us for many years, but we understand some of our customers have never met her, so we are also providing a brief introduction to Sherrie in the attached document. For those customers who have worked with Sherrie in the past, she needs no introduction, and we are excited about her continuing efforts in the Component Sale Department.

Midwest Cooling Towers Rebuilds a Tired Power Plant Cooling Tower

Challenge

Rebuild and refurbish a tired and unsafe 44-year old two-cell wood cooling tower located at a midwestern municipal power plant.

Solution

Midwest Cooling Towers was contacted to inspect the cooling tower and found it in bad shape. In the ensuing six years, an explosion at a nearby industrial plant further damaged the cooling tower.

Time came to undertake the repair/rebuild project. The originally planned replacement of approximately 50% of the structure turned into much more when the project started. It was determined that the structure was in much worse shape and for safety’s sake the cooling tower was almost entirely replaced.

Midwest Cooling Towers was able to reuse the mechanical equipment system (gear boxes, driveshafts, motors, fans, supports) and one fan stack. All the rest of the cooling tower was replaced: new structure, fill, eliminators, distribution system, fan deck, casing, and two fan stacks.

The result was a new life for a tired cooling tower. And, a very pleased customer
